“The image is from the series ‘This Golden Mile’ which explores the streets surrounding the famous one-mile stretch of Melton Road and Belgrave Road in Leicester. Documenting its arteries and veins to reveal the poetry of homes, temples and street corners. For its residents, the Golden Mile is both an entry point and an ending, the last mile of a long journey to Britain. Photographed over five years (2018 –22) as Britain left the EU, I wanted to celebrate this multicultural community during these politically polarising times. I hope to show our commonality and that communities like this are not an erosion of British values or its culture but a vital artery in our intertwined and tangled colonial histories.”
